SUMMARY OF THE CO-OPERATION
The Hattula-Janakkala-Nyahururu (Kenya) co-operation project is the part of The North-South Local Government Co-operation Programme
Components in the co-operation are Administration, Education, Environment and Tourism
ADMINISTRATION
Goal:
To strengthen local democracy and participation as well to promote gender equality
Purpose (immediate objective):
Enhancing awareness on responsive governance in the North and the South
Results:
1. Skilled staff of the municipal council capable of delivering services to the inhabitants promptly and equally.
2. Improved democratic practices
3.Accessible and cost-effective services for all residents
4. Efficient ICT-in the municipal council administration
5. Increased capacity to manage Ethnic Relations, Cultural Diversity and Integration
EDUCATION
Goal:
To achieve universal primary education, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger as well promote gender equality and empower girls.
Purpose (immediate objective):
Increased capacity and knowledge of teachers, councilors and employees to produce high quality education for children. Improved management of schools.
Results:
1. Three constructed classrooms and 1 computer lab in Mariakani Primary school in a period of three years; one unit each year
2. Perimeter Fence and tree planted for Mariakani Primary school during the first year
3. Trained teachers and council staff on computer proficiency; high quality teaching for all children
4. Established and active environment and writers clubs in the two schools
5. Trained council staff on community development
6. Gender and special group equality
7. Increased capacity to manage Ethnic Relations, Cultural Diversity and Integration
ENVIRONMENT
Goal:
To ensure environmental sustainability in Nyahururu and Finnish municipalities.
Objectives:
1. Increased capacity and knowledge of personnel and
councillors to manage environment as well improve infrastructure for healthier and more attractive environment for residents, tourists and investors.
2. Improved solid waste management and running of the dumpsite and raised awareness about reducing the amount of waste, recycling and comfortable environment.
3. To manage and conserve natural environment so as to attract investors, tourists, residents and avoid erosion – will be achieved by planting more trees and marketing the potential of Nyahururu for tourism and ecotourism activities to potential investors who will then increase facilities in the area.
4. To create awareness in schools for best environmental management practices.
5. Drinking and waste water management improves through capacity building and systematic land use planning.
TOURISM
Goal:
To eradicate poverty and hunger and to promote gender equality.
Purpose (immediate objective):
Increased capacity and knowledge of councilors and employees to promote tourism. Built infrastructure.
Results:
1. Increased tourism activity and revenue collected in Nyahururu municipal council
2. Better managed tourist attraction sites
3. Improved security at the Thompson Falls and the Hippo sanctuary for tourists and locals
4. Active participation of the local communities in the management of the sites
5. Nyahururu is the part of tourist site marketing network and it works efficiently
6. Two entrepreneurs in lodge accommodation business have invested to Nyahururu.
7. Twenty tourist guides have trained in this project in Nyahururu and they operate efficiently as entrepreneurs
8. Attractive environment for investors in tourism sector. This means e.g. green areas, developed infrastructure, business advisor is available and business promotion is working, good capacity to offer land for lodges.
9. ICT-technology is one of the tools of tourist site marketing.
